Victoria is a native of New Mexico, having grown up in Albuquerque’s North Valley. She was a participant in bilingual programs throughout her schooling and was awarded the Title VII scholarship while attending UNM where she received her degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Bilingual Education. She taught with the Albuquerque Public Schools, as well as, with the Department of Defense Schools in Yokosuka, Japan. After returning from Japan, she received her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from UNM. Tafoya has been in the educational field for 20 years. She has been a school site Administrator, district office Administrator of Federal, Bilingual, and Native American Programs in Rio Rancho Public Schools, and now serves as Director of Operations for Dual Language Education of New Mexico.
Victoria is a member of several organizations that support Bilingual Education and is currently serving as Interim Director for the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education. Ms. Tafoya has previously served on the State Bilingual Advisory Committee and as a member on the New Mexico Business Roundtable Steering Committee. Ms. Tafoya is a current board member on the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders, a member of the Coalition for the Majority, and was newly appointed to a local charter school’s governing board. She has been a member of the AdvancED Council for three years.
As a strong advocate for quality programs supporting linguistically diverse populations, she maintains a focus on supporting students to become bilingual and biliterate in English and a second language as well as meeting state academic content standards in all subject areas. It is her goal to work with others to improve and support public education in New Mexico. It is her hope that all students possess the competence and attitudes to be successful, contributing members of our thriving, diverse society.
Victoria is a proud mother to two beautiful daughters. Her husband Greg, also a public servant, is currently the Bernalillo County Fire Chief.
